#IDWGS Essay: History of Afghan women by Khan Mohammad Halimizadeh Khostam
History of Afghan Women
For the longest historical periods, Afghan women have played an important role in their society and culture. Throughout history, Afghan women have faced great challenges and changes, including the impact of wars, political and social changes, and efforts to preserve women's rights and empower them. This article examines a summary of the history of Afghan women in different periods.
Throughout ancient history, Afghan women played an active role in society. Antiquities show that women were engaged in fields such as trade, agriculture, and the arts. But during different periods of history, the impact of wars and political changes on Afghan society and its women can be seen.
In the 1970s, with the beginning of the civil war in Afghanistan and social and political movements, Afghan women emerged as active forces in support of social and political changes. They played an important role in trying to bring about positive changes in their society, including equal educational and employment rights with men, political participation, and human rights. Afghan women strongly protested against censorship and restrictions and held demonstrations for their rights.
With the beginning of Taliban rule in the 1990s, women's rights were severely restricted and women were forced to observe traditional and religious restrictions. Education, work, and even women's basic rights were persecuted and banned. This era was bitter and difficult for Afghan women and they faced great restrictions and dangers.
From 2001 onwards and with the fall of the Taliban government, Afghan women gradually returned to society and gained more rights and freedoms. They were involved in education, career, politics, and social activities. For example, women played important roles in central and local government, in education, in health care, and in the media.
But due to the recent events in Afghanistan, especially the Taliban gaining power in the country, the future of Afghan women has been challenged again. As we have seen, the Taliban government has implemented policies that limit women's rights and impose many restrictions on their education, work, and political participation.
Finally, the history of Afghan women shows that they have faced various challenges and changes over the years. On the one hand, Afghan women emerged as active forces in support of social and political changes and held demonstrations for their rights, but on the other hand, they faced governments that restricted women's rights. The future of Afghan women in the era when the Taliban came to power is unknown and only time will tell what will happen to them. We hope that Afghan women can gain their rights and freedoms and play their important role in Afghan society and culture.
Afghan women have played important roles in the central and local government and in the field of healthcare. In recent years, women's empowerment and their participation in political and social activities have been considered to achieve sustainable development and improve the health and treatment situation in Afghanistan.
In the central government, Afghan women have played key roles at various political and executive levels. Some women have been elected as ministers and governors in the central government. They have important responsibilities in various fields including economy, education, labor and women's affairs. These women have tried to improve their living conditions and health by promoting women's rights and empowering them.
In local governments, Afghan women play active roles in local decision-making and the implementation of policies and programs. As members of local councils and leaders of youth and women, they formulate and implement health programs and projects according to local needs and issues. These councils and local organizations are supported by the local government and non-governmental organizations to facilitate the improvement of the health and treatment situation in cities and villages.
In the field of healthcare, Afghan women play an important role. They work as nurses, midwives, doctors, and medical staff and bring health services to communities. Women in the field of healthcare in Afghanistan have achieved high education and in some areas have even gone to internships and specialized training. Through education and awareness, Afghan women can help improve the level of healthcare and treatment in Afghanistan and provide effective services to the society.
However, it can be said that Afghan women still face challenges. In the past, under the Taliban regime, women faced severe restrictions on access to education, employment and public activities. With the fall of the Taliban government and political changes in Afghanistan, better conditions have been created for women's participation in government and various fields of activity, but the path of women's empowerment in these fields is still developing and progressing.
Therefore, although Afghan women play important roles in the central and local government and in the field of healthcare, there is still a need for more efforts to ensure women's rights and their further development.
